"YOU RUN. I KNOW YOU WILL STAY ALIVE."
Eva Galler was born in Oleszyce, Poland, into a traditional Jewish family. At seventeen, she escaped a deportation train bound for Belzec after her father urged her to run. She survived the war under a false identity, later reunited with her future husband Henry, rebuilt her life in Sweden, and immigrated to the United States. They settled in New Orleans in 1962.
Eva wrote Yiddish poems to liven up parties and gatherings of the New Americans Social Club. She referenced current events, the Club’s adventures and Club elections in a gently humorous way.
Poems performed by Yelena Shmulenson.
Production of this presentation was made possible by generous support from The MJ Sindler Family Fund for Culture & Media.
